Oriental Food for Vegetarians and Vegans

Go green is the buzz word doing rounds, and the same applies to your diet. Animal lovers and dieticians are singing in chorus for people to chew vegetables instead of meat. Though, they may have their reasons for doing so. Vegetables have their own health benefits, they have their own flavour and taste, and yes they also go easy on your purses. Oriental dishes are holy grails for vegans, as there are countless vegetarian dishes which they can opt for.

History of Vegetarian Food

The vegans in Asia can be traced back to the early civilizations when Hindu and Buddhist religious philosophy preached against killing of animals. Hence, the oriental world was introduced to the concept of veganism quiet early, even before 1908 when the International Vegetarian Union was formed. Hence, no wonders that vegetarian food has evolved from ancient times in Asia, and at present there are many vegetable dishes which have their unique flavour including, lo mein, vegetarian egg rolls, vegetarian fried rice, Chinese tofu recipes, Chinese soup and noodles.

Chinese Style Spaghetti

chinese style spaghettiTo give a new definition to an ordinary plate of noodles or spaghetti, try out this recipe which elevates the taste level of the dish. The ingredients you need for this includes:

  • Take 1 pound spaghetti
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 cup snow peas
  • 2 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 4 sliced green onions
  • 1 diced cucumber
  • 2 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
  • 2 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon dry mustard and 1 tablespoon hot chilli oil

Preparation: cook spaghetti for 10 minutes in water until they are soft, and drain out the water. Stir sesame oil and soy sauce in spaghetti. Then cook snow peas in a microwave for about 2 minutes. Then add vinegar, chilli oil, and mustard to the snow peas, green onions, cucumber, and parsley until they are completely mixed. Then toss together the spaghetti and the veggies until they mix up well. And that’s it. A quick and healthy vegetarian dish is all yours to be gulped.

Thai Tofu Vegetable Stir-Fry

This is another dish vegans would love to take a bite on. It is chocked with flavour, especially the dynamic combination of coconut milk, lime, soy sauce, and chilli, makes the dish standout. This dish gives you the loose reign to choose the vegetables you want, or whatever is available at hand. This dish, including preparation and cooking can be prepared under 30 minutes.

Vegan Ginger Lo Mein

This is another vegetarian dish which sings for its’ self, and is a very popular noodle recipe. For this you mix together teriyaki sauce, vinegar, ginger, soy sauce, and keep it aside. Then cook lo mein noodles until they are soft. Sautee the vegetables in 2 tablespoon of olive oil for 5 minutes until tender. You then whisk teriyaki and soy mixture with lo mein noodles, and cook for 5-7 minutes, keep stirring and add water if required. And lo, your dish is ready.
