Who doesn’t love home delivery services? We all do and many people or families rely solely on home food delivery services. Have you ever wondered how this service ever came into existence? When and where was the very first home food delivery made? With some research to this intriguing question, we did come up with the answer and here it is:

Modern home delivery services are solely dependent of cars, bikes or big trucks. However, these vehicles were not available when the home delivery service started. The very first home delivery service began during the Second World War in London. However, the interesting part is that this home delivery service solely depended on bicycles. In the 1920s, the bicycle was used only for the delivery of mails or parcels. Automobiles were definitely in use during that period; however, for delivery purposes bicycles were quite inexpensive and affordable. The first home food delivery service took place in London during the Second World War. The city was always under the peril of a disaster or some part of the city was in ruins. Due to this, the citizen dwelled either in bomb shelters or some underground hideout places.

HomeFoodDeliveryFlushingThis was when the idea of home food delivery was invented by the British Government. To ensure the health and wellness of their citizens, the government organized groups to keep feeding the citizens in spite of all the havoc and danger. Groups were made of chefs, volunteer kitchen staff and people for delivery. During the bombings, the delivery service caught impetus and post war, the service continued for injured veterans and citizens. Home Delivery service was also rendered to war returned veterans and needed time to settle down.

The idea which initiated in the United Kingdom didn’t take long to reach to the United States. In U.S. the very first home delivery was done in Philly in the year 1952 where it strived to feed people who could not go out of their home and had to be met with their dietary requirements. From Philly, the service was spread to Columbus and then to New York. In the year 1954, Australia adopted this incredible invention but in their very own fashion. The first service was done by a woman on a tricycle and it was later taken over by the Red Cross.

Today these services are available all over the world. The services have advanced to the point where hot as well as cold food is also delivered at your door steps. The fascinating part about the invention of home delivery is the fact that it was initiated for people who needed help. However, in this modern world, we are definitely not aware about the privilege of home delivery services. In those days, home delivery service was special because it was viable only for needy people. However, today we depend on home delivery majority of times. There are still some organizations which provide these services to homebound people to meet their everyday dietary requirements.
